Unraveling the Mysteries of Histiocytic Diseases
نویسنده
چکیده
Canine histiocytic malignancies represent a group of neoplasms with shared morphological features but diverse cellular origin and potentially divergent biologic behavior. The malignant histiocytic disease complex was first recognized in Bernese Mountain Dogs and it has been considered to be familial in this breed. Subsequently, improved diagnostic techniques expanded the list of predisposed breeds to include Flat Coated Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Golden Retrievers. The disease is characterized by proliferation and tissue infiltration of pleiomorphic histiocytic cells in multiple organs. Neoplastic histiocytic infiltrates are most often found in the spleen, liver, lung, bone marrow and lymph nodes, while atypical locations including ocular and central nervous system sites have been also documented.

Diseases of the monocyte, macrophage and dendritic cell system are referred to as histiocytoses. Based on improved understanding of their pathobiology and molecular background histiocytoses have been recently re-classified into five groups. Nevertheless, for practical reasons the histiocytoses are grouped into: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (the most common entity), hemophagocytic lymphohistioc...

The search for the infectious agents responsible for cat-scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, and related syndromes has a long and often circuitous history. Recognition of the etiologic agents and a new understanding of the fundamental features of the epidemiology and natural history of modern day Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea)-associated diseases culminate a multipartite story that comb...

Kawasaki disease (KD) is the archetypal pediatric vasculitis, exemplifying the unique aspects and challenges of vascular inflammation in children. The condition is almost unheard of in adults, is closely associated with infections, and is self-limited, with fever resolving after an average of 12 days even without treatment. Yet KD is also a potentially fatal disease and the most common cause of...
